July 2021 Art Journey

I know I have been so slack again, I have gone a whole month and not given you any updates which means there is going to be loads to say now, I will try to keep it brief.  I’m sorry, time has just gotten away from me again this month.  Hubby and I keep saying how I need to sort out a schedule to help me get blogs out, I will, I promise, one day! Anyway here is a roundup of the month’s activities, if you want to know more details, please just ask.

StART Studio Portrait Class

I took a 6 week portrait class at an in person studio.  I’ve actually had the class booked and due to start since November 2020, however due to – well you know what – restrictions and lockdowns it had to be delayed, we tried again in January but again had to be delayed, but we eventually got it going and I was able to attend with around 8 other students and we learnt in a classroom how to create portrait work.  We used graphite pencils one week, acrylic or water colours, we had one week where we had a model in class, and we got to try drawing from life not photos, and finally we spent the rest of the weeks choosing a picture we wanted to draw, ourselves or someone we wanted to draw/paint and then worked hard on producing a final picture.

The Gallery is showing some more of the pieces I created and my progress.

Botanical Journal.

I followed a class on Live Art Journaling class and Self Development to make a journal that was designed to help ease us back into the world after lockdown.  The class was filmed and issued a while ago, however I have spent the last couple of days working on it and finishing it. Everything used is from my stash, magazine clippings, washi tapes and also some stickers bought from various places and some from Kia_Creates.

ICAD

61 days of ICAD came to an end on 31st July. I cannot believe I have achieved creating a piece of art every single day for 61 days. Yes sometimes I made 2 or 3 in a day so that I either caught up or had a break. But ultimately the project had me create something of my own design, every day. I didn’t follow a class, I didn’t follow a tutor, I didn’t go looking for ideas, yes sometimes I had to google a word to know what it meant, but ultimately every single design has come from me, using things in my stash and is on index cards,  I did run out of cards on one size and had to use bigger ones, but again its about using my stash not buying more things.  I actually followed the official Daisy Yellow Prompts, but also the prompts from Nina Fickett, so I doubled my ICAD everyday by using both prompts on one card.

My Gallery of cards is here

New Pen

I have been following a new UK company on Instagram, The Good Blue, run by Sunil, watching with excitement their manufacturing and testing process and anxiously awaiting the launch of their brand new Fountain Pen.   Honestly I love a good pen, that’s not in any doubt, and I’ve always wanted a good quality fountain pen.  I know I dont have the best writing, I know I play at learning calligraphy, but I absolutely knew I wanted to buy one of these pens when it was released.  I got the launch email and whilst I was not surprised at the price, as its appropriate for the work that has gone into designing and getting it to launch, I did suck in my breath and go really think omg do I buy it, especially as I am meant to be on a self imposed art supplies spending ban. So I was trying to find ways I could swing it in my own head, however I got super lucky that I had a conversation with my Dad on the same day, and whilst talking about my art journey I happened to mention the pen, and he reminded me that he had not yet bought me a present for my half centenary birthday this year. So we talked, and agreed between us that he would buy it for me. I wasn’t angling for that but I cannot deny I am super lucky!  So we placed the order and waited patiently for two days for it to arrive. Without doubt I am not disappointed, it is supplied in a metal tin, surrounded by protective sustainable fabric and I have two Nibs.  The pen we ordered was the “R615 Fountain Pen – Limited Edition” It has a gorgeous Royal blue barrel, It has a Ink Converter And the Nib is the Fine Flex which is designed to give a flex to a 1.44 mm line.

Thank you Dad for my birthday present, I truly am a happy with the pen.

I cannot lie, this is a truly gorgeous pen to hold, to write with, to own. I love it and I cannot wait to use it for every possible piece of writing and drawing I need to do. Shopping lists, post it notes, letters, signatures on documents, pictures of cats, one line drawings, whatever I will use it for everything! (p.s. I wrote an actual check out on Monday and I used the pen – it felt proper old school!!)

Moses Roper Project

I saw on Instagram an IG friend was featuring a University student Emily Hands who is doing an MA and as part of the MA she is collaborating with Gressenhall Museum to produce a piece of artwork that will be exhibited in the museum. The project is to depict Moses Roper in fabric.  Emily has chosen to ask members of the public to collaborate by producing a picture of Moses Roper, which she had produced onto fabric and then cut into small squares and ask members of the public to produce a small piece of art on each square that will ultimately be sewn together and displayed as a large piece.  I came across this and decided to offer my help, and I ended up doing two squares.  I haven’t used a needle and thread in many many years, and my pieces needed to me white work embroidery as I had plain pieces.

I enjoyed doing this, but took me out of my comfort zone,

If you have made it this far, I thank you, and I wish and you will say TTFN until next time.

June Roundup

Well firstly I have to say sorry for being away so long. It has been super easy to get out of the habit of blogging daily, or even weekly since stopping the April blog along and I have no real excuses. Being busy isn’t really a good excuse, especially when being busy is related to sitting at my art desk arting most of the time.

So I thought what better way to round up June than to list some of the stuff I have been doing.  I will pop as much artwork as I can over in the gallery, but the best place is to look on my Instagram page.

#LewdTubeLettering continued and I managed to participate every day – not that tricky when it was one word every two days.

I made a picture for my mother in law’s birthday.  I took a photo of her dog and drew inspiration from a class I took last year by Jennifer Steck.

ICAD : I have managed to do a daily card for ICAD and I am using one card to merge two prompts each time. I have uploaded all days so far into the Gallery

WorkshopWeek2021 : I purchased the vault of Workshopweek run by Becca, and participated in a number of the live events, as well as went through some of the classes.  I have these permanently so I shall be able to go back and really get my lettering fix when I want it, and have been introduced to many new artists in the lettering community.

#FodderChallenge : A 9 day free event run by Willa Wanders. I watched all the videos and took some of the classes. I haven’t purchased this so I will need to make sure I get whatever I want from it in good time.

Digital Art : I am trying my hand at digital art every so often, but like everything else, it’s a learning curve and I need time to practice and learn the software. This picture, and the tutorial is done using Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile (Free version for Android).

In Person Art Classes : I have started again. One day a week for 3 hours I go to a class room and I am learning portraiture techniques. I am LOVING being able to go out of the house and actually be in other people’s company.  It’s a 6 week course and we are 3 weeks in already.

Etsy : I launched my Etsy Store.  I haven’t had a sale yet, but I also have not heavily promoted it. It’s out there for when I can get my act together

PenguinFireDragon had her birthday last week, and I decided it would be a fun idea to make her a journal. It was heavily themed in her current obsession. Percy Jackson. And its total making time I would put at around 10 hours. From sourcing the materials, making to cover, putting it all together digitally, printing the pages, sorting out the signatures and ultimately fixing it all together. However this time doesn’t include the 3 or so hours it took my hubby to put the holes in the spine and the number of differing eyelet makers and fixings I had to purchase. Definitely a learning curve on things not to do again. But I think she liked it so overall a well worth it present, totally handmade, unique and personal for her.

I recorded a time-lapse video to show you.  I also made her birthday card and to continue the Percy Jackson theme she had a blue sponge cake with blue fondant icing and 15 candles on top.  Apparently the great PJ eats only blue things… !

Percy Jackson Junk Journal

OwslOwner Bedroom Makeover : This week has seen the start of the bedroom overhaul. Hubby has been busy making furniture, and this week we turfed the boy out of his room and I have started the decorating, three days in and I’ve fully emulsion the ceiling and walls, and today I have started the gloss work.

Gardening : It’s been hot here, but now it’s cooled off and we are getting a lot of rain, which means only one thing – everything is growing. So a reasonable amount of gardening is taking place. Including the growing of potatoes, tomatoes and runner beans 🙂 Our wildflower garden is proving difficult to grow, clearly the pigeons got the seeds, although the grass seeds germinated and are nice and tall!

Wow – when I write it out like this I realise how much I have been doing – no wonder I am exhausted!

Onwards to July.. I have a lot planned, oops no I wont say any more now, I’d hate to bore you and also it means you might come back another day to read more 🙂

Until next time, happy arting 🙂

June Art Challenge

So this month I have once again set myself up to do some more art challenges, honestly what am I like, it’s not as if I don’t have enough to do but I just have to add myself to some more too!

WorkshopWeek2021 – Art classes hosted by Becca of TheHappyEverCrafter, a free week of 35 tutors showing various arts for lettering, calligraphy, digital art and watercolours.  Although it is free, it was possible to buy the “Vault” for an early bird price and have lifetime access to the videos (which I did!), and it’s available still at a slightly higher price.  It’s a brilliant set of videos, almost all tutors are new to me, and I am learning so much.

#lewdtubelettering by @justwriteawayrenee and @reneeissancecolours  is an Instagram lettering challenge to write London Tube names in your own style, and the tube names are ones that could be taken to have a “naughty” connotation.  It’s fun and doesnt take me too long

ICAD2021 and of course I decided at the last minute to join ICAD for the first time. It was originally created by @DaisyYellow and has been running 11years.  She seems to be running this as a whole business and you can really get massively involved, or you can just join by using the prompts daily and post using #dyicad2021.  I am using the 3 prompts issued by Mixed Media artist Nina Fickett.

#FodderChallenge is a 9 days free course hosted by Willa Wanders on her teachable platform, where 9 tutors are showing us how to use our stash to make wonderful fodder to use and embellish our projects.
And of course, as well as this is all the other stuff I take part in.  Art classes from Wanderlust, LifeBook, Karen Campbell. And subscription boxes from KiaCreates, Artful, LollipopBoxClub, ScrawlrBox.  As well as making birthdy and cards for family & friends. Happy mails for various peer groups from WAY. And of course keeping the family alive and well and on top of their school and work commitments.

Well thats a “quick” roundup of what I am / have been up to this month so far. I hope you find it interesting. I feel I have been a Big Girl and not signed up for the free Kaleidoscope taster week from Willowing, I really want to do it as its an amazing intro into a new course, but I know I just don’t have the capacity for another freebie, and I won’t buy the course as I have so much outstanding already, so big girl pants went on and I said No…. it didn’t feel good but I did it anyway!

Until next time … Arty hugs to you all ???️

My Etsy store has launched!

The question of should I / shouldn’t has been debated for a while.  Should I open a shop to sell some of the journals I am turning out instead of just storing them in a box once they are made.

Hubby and I have been talking back and forth with the question and the possibilities and practicalities of it all.  He has very carefully guided me, not telling me what I should do, wanting me to come to my own decision rather than forcing me in one direction or another. It’s my art, and so it’s my decision is very much his motto.  He does, and will always help enormously with the practical side of things, but the doing side is definitely my part of the equation.

After all the talking I have realised that unless I do something, it will always remain just talk. So I decided that I would create the site and list some items and they could just sit there and if I get lucky I might sell something.

So of course, being the person that I am, once I decided to do it I absolutely had to do it there and then.  I decided on Etsy because it appears to be the lowest risk option that is out there for the novice.  I really wanted to use a UK based site, however none of them are particularly well known and have a higher startup cost.  Using Etsy, at this time, is going to cost me very little in terms of setup costs. In fact within an afternoon I had created the site and added 6 journals for sale!

Does this mean I am a small business owner now? I have no idea what it actually means in terms of practicality and longevity, but it’s there and we shall see what happens!

You can access it by clicking on the picture above, but more importantly there is a permanent link on the title bar, and of course my LinkTree is set up to include it too and that is broadcast on all my social media outlets.

Oh golly gosh 2021 is turning into a big year for me, I turned 50, I’ve launched this web page, a YouTube channel and now an Etsy store! I think I’m becoming more than “just” a hobby artist  – this growing up malarkey is kinda fun isn’t it 🙂

I’d love for you to take a look and let me know your thoughts.

Snowy owl

The Snowy owl mainly eats small mammals but mainly lemmings and voles. The height of a Snowy owl can be between 53 and 65 cm, it has a wingspan of between 125 and 150 cm. The Snowy owl lives in the Arctic Circle, North America, Europe and Asia. Snowy Owls can live at least 9½ years in the wild and 35 years in captivity. The Snowy owl is predominantly white, but has spotted dots. They also have yellow eyes. The Snowy owls are the heaviest owl with a weight of 2KG.

The Snowy owl

I like the Snowy owl because of how elegant this big fluffy owl is. I also love how cute and slightly weird-looking the chicks are.
